Correspondence, drafts, reports, documents, notes, articles, speeches, legal papers, bills receipts, pamphlets, memorabilia, scrapbook, clippings, and other material, relating to all phases of Buchanan's career. Some papers pertain to his early career as an attorney, others to his business investments, Democratic politics in Pennsylvania and the Nation, Buchanan's diplomatic service as minister to Russia (1832-33) and England (1854-56), his period as Secretary of State (1845-49), as member of Congress, and as President (1857-61). Much material reflects the growing antagonism between North and South before the Civil War; other papers concern ontroversies during Buchanan's administration, notably the Post Office blank printing dispute (1857-60) and Buchanan's controversy with General Winfield Scott. Includes biographical material and writings by Buchanan concerning his administration, papers relating to the Democratic Convention of 1856, and records pertaining to several legal cases, notably the impeachment of Federal Judge Peck (1830-31). Includes letters from Simon Cameron, John W. Forney, John Slidell, Benjamin H. Brewster, Jeremiah Black, Nahum Capen, William B. Reed, John Meredith Read, Stephen Pleasonton, Mrs. David Lynch, and others.
